SCBA election controversy: Malik moving SC against LHC decision

Staff Report

LAHORE: Munir A Malik, claiming to be the Supreme Court Bar Association president, has said that he will challenge the Lahore High Court (Rawalpindi bench) decision in the Supreme Court.

Talking to Daily Times, Malik said that he had prepared a petition but would file it on Monday because he did not have a testified copy of the LHC order. He said that he would raise a question: Can an LHC single bench hear an SCBA matter?

He said that the Pakistan Bar Council was expected to hear the matter today (Saturday).

Talking to Daily Times, Justice (r) Malik Muhammad Qayyum said Malik had the right to go to court, but the matter should have not been taken to court. He alleged that it had become a practice by the Professional Group to take the matter of SCBA elections to court, adding that they also took the matter to the Supreme Court last year.

Munir A Malik told Daily Times that lawyers from Sindh would file a petition seeking that their votes be declared valid, although Justice (r) Malik Qayyum had declared their votes invalid. He said that Sindh lawyers would soon hold protest demonstrations against infringement of their rights. In a Professional Group’s meeting, Malik’s supporting group on Friday vowed to fight a legal and political battle for their rights. Hamid Khan, Pir Kaleem Khurshid, Ahmad Awais, Ramzan Chaudhry and Zulifqar Bukhari, the SCBA secretary, also attended the meeting.
